knitting!
Sometimes I follow knitting patterns and sometimes I make my own! If I make my own, they tend to have some relation to other parts of my life (queer/ plants). If I make my own, they’ll probably end up here if I think they’re cool! I also dye yarn with botanicals from time to time. I’ll share that here too! For all other knitting related things, feel free to find me on instagram, or on ravelry. Below are different patterns/ knits that are related to the work I talk about here.
As a fun little collab with Willow Lovecky (PhD Candidate at UVA studying bees!) we decided to host a knitting circle at Blandy Experimental Farm, the Virginia state arboretum and our field site/ home for the summer. We wanted to do some form of science outreach merged with our love for knitting and fiber arts. So… we thought what better to do than a knit along where we feature some of our research topics!
We put together this grid-based pattern, photo below, that features different research topics from different grad students at Blandy. We’ve got a butternut tree, spongy moth, blackgum, and a chimney bee! No one studies woodcocks but the woodcock family at Blandy has just been a true staple this summer. There’s tons of more info in the pattern booklet on Canva!
So this was a bit of a “let’s wing it and see what happens” type of project, and it turned out pretty well! It’s based off a grid pattern I self created with leaves of trees I love. The grid pattern is shown below (along wiht some photos of me wearing my double knit scarf). (I will never double knit a scarf again). Here are the trees featured in the pattern from top to bottom: sassafras, blackgum (sorta), willow oak, striped maple, white oak, and tulip tree.
